The Level 5 Certificate in Education (Cert Ed) – Lifelong Learning is designed for individuals aspiring to teach or currently teaching in the post-compulsory education and training sector. This includes colleges of further education, sixth form colleges, adult and community education, work-based learning providers, and other lifelong learning contexts. The course supports the development of subject-specific pedagogy and reflective practice, while meeting the Learning and Skills Teacher Occupational Standard. Trainees will gain professional teaching experience and explore inclusive education, curriculum design, and the integration of digital and core skills.
You will complete the Teaching Practice Requirement as part of this qualification, which includes: a minimum of 250 hours in a teaching role, with at least 150 hours of direct teaching; at least 20 hours must be completed in a second teaching context. You will gain experience across a range of teaching methods, learner groups, and learning contexts. Up to 20 hours of online teaching may also be included.
You willl complete four 30 credit modules. These include: Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment; Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher, and Being a Subject Specialist Teacher. Your fourth module will be a specialism, which could be Curriculum and Contect, EDI and Social Justice: Curriculum and Context, English as an Additional Language: Curriculum and Context and SEND: Curriculum and Context.
In completing the module assignments and observations you will be able to show that you are addressing the Learning and Skills Teacher Occupational Standard along with a number of themes which are seen as essential elements within the professional repertoire and activity of a teacher or trainer: Behaviour Management; Equality and Diversity and Social Justice; Subject specialist pedagogy; English and Maths; Digital Literacies; Professional Development.
This qualification is awarded by the University of Huddersfield. The course will run on Tuesdays 5-8.30pm.
