What are T Levels?

A T Level is a two-year technical education course for 16-19 year olds that follow GCSEs and one T Level is equivalent to three A Levels. T Levels have been co-designed with over 250 global and leading employers specifically to gain the knowledge and skills that employers need for the jobs of the future.

What is an industry placement?

A key aspect of all T Levels is the completion of an extended industry placement. Lasting for a minimum of 45 days (315 hours) industry placements are high quality, meaningful, and relevant to the T Level programme.  They offer the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and skills learnt in the classroom, and provide practical hands-on training in a real work environment.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT T LEVELS

  • Practical skills for your career specialism along with examination
  • T levels are career focused for you to develop the skills you need to compete for the best university places, higher/degree apprenticeships and highly skilled careers
  • T levels are for those who are ambitious and academically strong to go ahead to learn what a real career is like whilst studying

An industry placement lasts around 45 days over the two year course and is undertaken as individual days or in a set block. The length of your placement and when it will take place will differ depending on the T Level you choose to study.

They offer the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and skills learnt in the classroom, and provide practical hands-on training in a real work environment.

Students prepare by building the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required by employers, and individualised learning goals provide a focus for further development. The industry placement makes up 20% of the T Level programme, students are required to complete the full placement and make good progress towards their learning goals to successfully pass this element.

You don’t! Kirklees College have a dedicated work placement team that will arrange an appropriate work placement for you.

T Levels allow you to experience an industry while you continue your studies and give you the opportunity to specialise later in your career. You gain practical experience but also achieve the qualifications needed to move into a higher level of study if you wanted to go to university for example.

Apprenticeships are paid, work-based training and recommended for learners who already know what occupation they want to go into.

Each T Level will have different entry requirements depending on the subject.

The main difference is that with a T Level, your time will be split 80% in the classroom, with the remaining 20% in an industry placement. For an apprenticeship, 80% of your time is spent in the workplace on the job and 20% classroom learning.

With an apprenticeship, you will earn a wage whilst you work. It’s usually four days a week working, supported by one day a week of study at college. Employment must be secured to become an apprentice.

What’s next?

T Levels have been designed to help students to make informed choices and have a clear progression route. T Levels have allocated UCAS points to support progression to higher education. Students can also progress to a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) at Kirklees College as an alternative to university or skilled employment.
