A group of Health and Social Care students have just embarked on their placement journey at Dewsbury & District Hospital with the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust.
Following a comprehensive 4-day induction, the students are now immersed in hands-on learning on a variety of wards, including surgical, stroke, acute, and the discharge lounge.
Students have also been shadowing a healthcare assistant in providing care for patients, including personal care, nutrition and hydration, moving and handling, and physiological measurements. They have been completing a 90-hour placement this academic year and will continue at the hospital next year.
As a college, we have worked with Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust since 2022 to offer placements for T Level Health students, and now they’ve opened their doors to those studying Health and Social Care Level 3.

Charlotte Ryan, Personal Development Tutor at Kirklees College, said: “These placements offer a range of benefits for our students. They’re getting valuable experience working with patients and are also able to expand on the knowledge they’ve gained in college. A huge thank you to Dewsbury & District Hospital and the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust for helping us give our students these amazing opportunities.”
Emma Gregory, Matron for the Professional Development and Education at Mid-Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, said: “We have worked in partnership with Kirklees College for a number of years, with our recent focus on supporting placements for students studying T Levels and other health-related qualifications. These placements help bring learning to life, giving students the opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like working in a hospital environment.
“The placements provide meaningful, real-world exposure, enabling students to develop practical skills and confidence as they begin their journey towards a career in healthcare. It is also a great way to showcase the Trust as a local, supportive employer.”
