We have been catching up with a student who, having completed his Access to Higher Education course, is now planning to study Biomedical Sciences at the University of Huddersfield from September.
Zain Robertson started at Entry Level 3 in the Skills for Work and Life department before progressing onto Access to HE whilst also achieving a Grade 4 in GCSE English and maths.
In this interview, Zain talks through his experiences of studying English and Maths and how these skills have helped him progress on his journey within education.
How confident were you when you first started English and maths at college?
It took the first year of being in college to settle in, but the more I did it, the more confident I became.
What advice do you have for other students studying for their maths and English qualifications?
Set yourself up for success with regular revision. Focus on one exam at a time and always show up and try your best.
What did you enjoy most about learning maths and English at Kirklees College?
I do enjoy learning generally. Having people in class who also cared and passionate teachers was a huge help. I loved learning about both subjects, but I was less confident with my writing. However, my tutor Ivan really helped me grow in confidence with that.
Did you find the extra revision sessions were useful, and what were the main benefits?
I liked that they were student-led and we could pick and choose which parts of the sessions we wanted to focus on. They helped set me up for independent revision really well.
How has English and Maths at college set you up for your current course and future studies?
English has improved my spelling and grammar a lot, which has been great for essay and report writing on my Access to HE course, and will help me when I go to University in September. There was also a numeracy unit on my Access course, where I could apply what I had learned in maths class.
