COURSE

OVERVIEW

The course gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of coaching sport and physical activity. The course explores theoretical and practical principles and permits the opportunity to apply real-life sporting situations. You will be encouraged to participate in a wide variety of sport coaching and leadership-based activities, developing relevant skillsets to prepare you for further study, training or a career in the industry.
You will explore sporting tactics, rules and regulations understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle, promote improvement strategies and investigate current issues and barriers for physical activity. You will produce a career plan to map out your goals and how you can achieve them. understand how behaviours may impact on sports profiles, produce career plans for yourselves whilst analysing factors that influence the performance of an athlete.
You will have the opportunity to gain invaluable practical experience by applying the skills and knowledge you have learnt by working with sporting academies and other external partners. This will give you experience working with various different individuals in a sporting context and develop your understanding of technical, communication and organisational factors.
We encourage our students to further their own development by accessing and undertaking extra qualifications in coaching, leadership and first aid. Alongside your course, you can combine learning and playing by joining one of our sports academies for football or rugby league in partnership with Huddersfield Giants.

A minimum of 5 GCSEs with the following grades: English at 4 or above and maths at 3 or above and 3 other GCSEs at 4 or above including PE or a sports background. If maths or English are not attained at a grade 4, you will be placed on the Level 3 Introductory Certificate, rather than a Level 2 qualification.
You will be assessed through discussions, group presentations and activities, written assessments, practical demonstrations, fitness tests, logbooks and diaries and observations.
Higher Education Employment in the industry
A sports qualification can lead to a range of careers, including working as a sports coach, fitness instructor, sport development officer, health and wellbeing co-ordinators or a PE teacher.
