COURSE

OVERVIEW

This course has now started for academic year 2025/26. The course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school and college environments, covering all aspects of specialist support.
You will understand schools and colleges as organisations, as well as children and young people’s development. You will learn how to safeguard children and young people and maintain relationships with them. You will support the health and safety of children and positive behaviour in a learning environment. You will learn how to support learning activities and English, maths and ICT in a learning environment.
You will support assessment for learning and engage in professional development. You will learn more about supporting speech, language and communication, as well as how to support bilingual learners. You will understand how to support those with special educational needs and young people’s transitions through each stage of their education. You will also support the role of play, leisure and extra-curricular activities.
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams or setting up an information board. You will also be required to undertake 6-10 hours of independently identified placement on a weekly basis.

The level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification and a minimum of level 2 English and level 1 maths. A DBS check and 10 hrs per week placement/employment in a relevant setting is also required.
