On Wednesday 21 January, Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin visited Kirklees College’s Engineering and Process Manufacturing Centres in Huddersfield. Mayor Brabin toured both centres, getting the chance to speak with staff and students about how Kirklees College is leading the way in Engineering and Manufacturing in West Yorkshire.

The college’s two specialist centres host state-of-the-art facilities for engineering, fabrication and welding, motor vehicle and food and drink process manufacturing, which attracts thousands of students and apprentices of all ages.

The Mayor also visited the Kirklees Operator Skills Hub, which is based at the Engineering Centre. The Hub is a state-of-the-art facility for Construction Plant Maintenance Machinery operations, created in collaboration with Kirklees Council and Flannery Plant Hire.

Steve Plumstead, Director of Curriculum for Construction, Engineering and Land-Based studies at Kirklees College said: “It was great to welcome the Mayor to our centres today and show her how we are creating opportunities and changing lives by inspiring the next generation of engineers and technicians.”

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said:

“It’s great to see Kirklees College helping to boost skills and grow the workforce our region needs, particularly in priority sectors like engineering, manufacturing and construction.

“By building a strong pipeline of talent, we’re making sure local people can benefit from the opportunities being created by major projects such as our Weaver Network and the TransPennine Route Upgrade.

“It’s helping more people to secure good, well-paid jobs in a stronger, brighter West Yorkshire.”
