Introducing you to Paddy Maylett, Programme Lead for Brickwork at Kirklees College. In this interview, he talks about his amazing career and the benefits of starting your training at Kirklees College.

What was your experience like before teaching?

At first, working in the construction industry was difficult. Ultimately, though, it’s really rewarding.

Were there any particular highlights or projects?

There was an amazing house I worked on a few years ago. It was a big, two-storey, seven-bedroom house. It took a lot of planning to get started. I actually worked on this with some former Kirklees College apprentices.

This was the last project I worked on before I started training and began my teaching career, so I will always be very proud of it.

What’s the best thing about a career in the sector?

When you walk past a building or house that you have worked on and spent time on. It’s great being able to walk past and say, “I did that, or I helped on that.”

It’s also a sector and industry that will stand the test of time and can lead to various careers.

What made you want to get into teaching?

Getting into teaching was something I’d been planning ever since I was at college. I had an amazing tutor who made me think about a career in teaching after I got some experience within the industry.

What would you say is the best thing about studying a Construction course at Kirklees College?

The spaces we give the students are perfect for them to flourish and start their careers. We recently revamped all the workshops, and we always give them all the latest tools.

Many staff in our department have also worked for several years in the industry. That is really beneficial for someone starting their training.

What advice would you give to a Year 10 or Year 11 student that is thinking about applying to study Construction at Kirklees College?

One of the main things I always tell those still in school is to get their Maths and English done. This makes things a lot easier. I’d also tell them to try and get some work experience so they are already knowledgeable before they start college.

Start an exciting career at Kirklees College that will stand the test of time.
