Kirklees College is taking part in the Student Commission on Racial Justice, a national student-led project giving thousands of young people a voice on racial justice.

The initiative has been designed by Leaders Unlocked, a social enterprise that enables young people and underrepresented groups to have a stronger voice on the issues that affect their lives to help shape decision-making for the better.

Working in partnership with a number of other colleges across the country, the new project aims to bring students together to champion racial equality. The commission will examine young people’s experience of racial equality, explore racial disparities across different areas of society and involve young people in developing actions to address inequality both now and in the future.

Racial justice is one of the most important issues amongst the student community and young people are passionate about amplifying the issues of racism and inequality in society, including education, employment, health and policing. The Student Commission on Racial Justice reflects the college values of inclusivity, diversity and respect and exemplifies the college’s commitment to creating meaningful change in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Our student representatives are asking 16-25-year olds to share their views via a simple questionnaire. These will be collated to make recommendations at a national level, as well as to inform college strategy and policy.
