In response to the tragic events in Ukraine, Kirklees College has pledged its support not just to our students and staff who are affected by the war, but those affected in the local community and beyond.

We have encouraged all staff to create space and time to have conversations with our students about their thoughts and feelings and have reminded all students and staff of the various support channels in college which at a time like this are even more invaluable.

The college has previously pledged its support for the Good for Me Good for FE campaign. With the crisis unfolding in Ukraine, we have extended our support to those affected by the war. Kirklees College has set up donation points at all centres, and it is times like these that the kindness and unity of our community shines through.

Donations are being taken to Focus4Hope in Brighouse which are sending much-needed aid to Ukraine, Poland and Romania.

Within the college, a fundraising event was held in the Huddersfield Centre Atrium all day on Thursday 10 March. Students from the Hair and Beauty department did manicures and haircuts, and other departments did bake sales and brought in donations. The event united the entire KC Community in their support for the people of Ukraine as donations flooded the atrium, with a further £400 being raised on the day.

We would like to give a special mention to an ESOL student at our Huddersfield centre, Ouleye, who brought in 10 bags of clothing/food/hygiene products and other essential aid for those in Ukraine.

Ouleye’s sister was studying at university in Ukraine and has recently made the four-day trip to Poland. Ouleye has spoken with her sister and she is now safe.
