We have been catching up with Liam Jenkinson, a Health and Social Care tutor at Kirklees College. Liam has over 17 years of experience in the NHS and is now helping to train the next generation of healthcare professionals at the college.

Here, he talks about that amazing career and the benefits of starting your career at Kirklees College.

What experience did you have before teaching? Did you work in the health sector?

I have over 17 years of experience working in the NHS, I have worked across multiple specialities.

Were there any particular highlights working in hospitals?

For me, the highlights of the job were seeing patients who were very unwell become fitter and stronger and leave the hospital well.

What’s the best thing about a career in the sector?

If you want to help people and make a difference to someone’s life, then working in the health and social care sector is a great career path.

What would you see is the best thing about studying Health and Social Care at Kirklees College?

Health and Social Care at Kirklees college is a fantastic place to study because the teachers come from a wide range of different professional backgrounds and we embrace the colleges values of kindness, unity and excellence, as well as always aiming to create opportunities and change lives.

What advice would you give to someone in year 10 or year 11 looking to start their career in Health and Social Care?

I would say just do it. Health and Social Care can lead to many different professions and can get you to university to do courses of all different types. If you really do like making a difference to others, choose Health and Social Care at Kirklees College.

If a student is starting the course in September, how would you suggest they prepare over the next few weeks and months?

I would suggest having a look at all the different aspects of Health and Social Care, explore person centred care, equality and diversity and having a good think about what role you would like to undertake in the future.
