Our Skills for Work and Life students from Huddersfield Centre have been making a huge impact in the community through an inspiring gardening project.

Along with their tutor, Sabi Grewal, the students have all made a truly positive difference to our local area through their work at a community garden on Prospect Street in Springwood.

The group dedicated time and effort to transform the space, successfully growing a wonderful range of fresh produce, including courgettes, pumpkins, potatoes, beetroots and herbs. As a generous contribution to the neighbourhood, all vegetables and herbs grown here are available for local residents to help themselves to and enjoy.

This project has provided so much value to everyone involved

Beyond the skills they’ve all gained, the project has helped students build valuable skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and communication. They have also become more confident in their own abilities.

Through the students’ hard work, they have not only achieved this great personal growth but also created a wonderful way to bring people together and strengthen connections across the local community.

Tutor Sabi Grewal said: “I am so proud of the students for all their hard work and dedication. It is great to see the impact they’ve had on the local area.”

Why are these Skills for Work and Life courses so important

The range of courses are designed to help support people wanting to improve their basic skills for work and everyday living.

Our course includes pathways to employment, independent living and mainstream curriculum. Throughout their time at the college, all students receive one-to-one learning support, and some courses also offer classroom lessons and work placements.
