A GCSE Maths and English student has credited her course and a recent writing competition for helping to develop her skills and confidence.
Phoenix Jackson won the Non-Fiction section of the Dewsbury Writing Competition 2026 having been tasked with writing a speech about introducing or improving facilities around college where learners could talk about general student facilities and also make contextual links to their curriculum areas.
When talking about the competition, Phoenix said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the competition; it was a valuable learning experience that helped me develop my English Language skills and encouraged me to persevere through challenges.”
In addition to Phoenix, Summer Watson (Xplorer) and Millie Richardson (Hair and Beauty) also won prizes that were kindly gifted by Jo Shaw, Head of Department for Community, Business, Hair and Beauty and Barbering at Kirklees College.

Experiences of studying at college
Phoenix spoke fondly about studying at Kirklees College and the guidance received from tutors, saying: “The tutors have been amazing. They have helped me become a better writer, and I now feel much more confident about my next steps in education and career.”
Plans for the future
Phoenix says she wants to pursue a career in acting and musical theatre and plans to start her training in these areas once she has completed her studies at Kirklees College.
